Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
