Celebratory Displays along with a Toast for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Agreement Bringing Back Captives
The declaration regarding a deal projected to result in the freeing of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for over two years has caused delight and relief throughout the nation.
An organization that has advocated for the return of Israeli captives held in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 captives have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been recovered and eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering started applauding and dancing beneath US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a sign saying: “We love Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” the woman said.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it is such a comfort,” she said. “We must witness them come back home to their loved ones.”

Families Celebrate Using Pyrotechnics
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the announcement that he would be returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight was palpable throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Released Captives Offer Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then cheering “To life”, which means “for life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in pushing for a deal that brings the return of all those still detained within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he felt “broken” that his cousin would not be among those returning home yet felt “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she felt like she was living “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems like it might be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it remained too early to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage is here, we won’t open the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she said.
“So many things might occur up to the final instant so this is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who participated in the efforts and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only when the last captive is safely home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier this year.
