One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.

The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood the economist's determination to resign.

"We value his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the directors," the organization commented.

Political Context

This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its records on Epstein.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. The President has stated he plans to endorse the measure, after modifying his view on the matter following pressure from his supporters.

A group of Epstein-related messages made public by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.

The emails showed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the academic to notable global figures.

After the messages were shared with the public, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild faith and mend bonds with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was no longer affiliated with the organization.

Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
