Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen others got wounded in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters entered the residence near the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away after the incident was located shortly later. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location displayed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He thought the blast had happened on a story above the doorway and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
