Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and actor whose captivating voice was instrumental in popularizing reggae music across the globe. He passed away at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and loyal following.

Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

He is among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
