The Actress Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ Tearing the Country Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she finds it inappropriate fitting to voice opinions countering the Trump administration, worried it could exacerbate polarizing arguments and further divisions throughout the country.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Says Jennifer Lawrence
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner commented, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I believed I was acting frantically like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars fail to influence whatsoever on electoral choices.”
She continued, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on a matter that’s going to add fuel to a fire dividing the country apart.”
Shifting Views
Lawrence has previously been open about supporting conservative and liberal presidential nominees throughout her life. Raised by a right-leaning family in her home state, she supported John McCain in 2008 then moving to the left-leaning politics and stating she realized during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was voting against her individual liberties as a woman.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she remarked that a Trump victory would be “a catastrophic event” and backed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. More recently, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “because I think she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will do whatever she can to defend women’s health rights.”
Industry Position
The star was joined by most of Hollywood in her rejection of Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage public figures have over the voting intentions was emphasized by his election win.
“The second term feels different,” said the actress regarding Trump’s presidency. “As he made his plans clear. We understood his record for four years. He was very clear. And that’s the option selected.”
New Release
Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she plays a young mom who struggles with her emotional state in the countryside. At a interview session for the project in Venice, she addressed the situation in the Middle East: “It’s frightening. It’s devastating. What’s happening is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis and it’s horrible.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by stating that she was disheartened by “the lack of civility in the discussions of the political landscape at present and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids today. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
Lawrence sought to redirect outrage about the issue to decision-makers rather than celebrities. “Concentrate on who is responsible,” she said, in what many took to be a reference to the declaration supported by thousands of Hollywood professionals to boycott certain cultural organizations.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim early in her career for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, is receiving praise for her work in her latest project. Although the director has disputed the story being seen as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, she said that she identified with parts of her role’s experience after the arrival of her new baby, not long after production wrapped.
“It was fear about my child,” she said, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then doubting everything that I was doing. I was seeing a therapist, but I began using a treatment called the prescription and I took it for a short period and it was effective.”
Professional Experiences
The actor also mentioned of the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the film while she was some months pregnant and limited physically.
“It’s refreshing,” she said, about having to abandon insecurities. “Truly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
