The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
