UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
